Meditation for doers

(TL;DR: things are about to get sciency)

When it comes to wellbeing, we mean business. So we set about designing creative wellness workshops and brand events that delivered Real Results. Real impact. Real-time. And that meant getting nerdy about the benefits of art on our brains and bodies.

A scientific take on mind, body and soul. Enter “Meditation For Doers”, the Recess Living approach to mental health management.

Guiding our CREATIVE WELLNESS  approach:

  1. The power of the pause

  2. The path to calm

  3. The neurobiology of joy

  4. The purpose of play

  5. The case for community care

The power of the pause

In a world that’s go-go-go, we say rest-rest-rest. (Hi, hyper-productivity gurus, this one’s for you.)

Finding the time (and willpower) to fully switch off is hard work. Especially when everything we own pings us into distraction. Without rest, we’re running on empty - at home, at work, and with each other. That’s why we’ve made resting a little easier. Active meditation that gives your mind something healthy to chew on.

The PATH TO CALM

When our daily stressors become too tricky to navigate, we can get caught in an anxious loop, unable to think clearly or find calm. This is where our Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) goes into “Freeze” mode and our Window of Tolerance to the outside world feels smaller. Queue: burnout, fatigue and demotivation.

Too much stress is damaging for the body. To move our ANS into a state of Rest and Digest, we must gently calm our amygdala. Enter: creative play.

Creative play helps us relieve stress by focusing on something positive and physical (outside of the body). Our breathing returns to normal and we can finally process emotions without panic.

The neurobiology of joy

If our body is a canvas, these neurotransmitters are the artists. Painting away in response to their environment, and working together to create a balanced picture. Clever, right? But when one of the artists falls short, it’s up to us to help.

Remember, every artist has its muse. Experimenting with different creative practices keeps those artists inspired and our canvas colourful. In other words, joy keeps our nervous system and lives flourishing.

The purpose
of play

What are we missing when it comes to health?

sleep | nutrition | movement | play

Creative play is the vehicle through which we practise creative wellness. Sleeves rolled up, hands dirty. Art therapy, at its most joyful.

But how does play support mental health?

  • Improves cognitive function

  • Engages sensorimotor skills

  • Enhances memory

  • Improves self-esteem and self-awareness

  • Nurtures emotional resilience

  • Lifts our mood

  • Cultivates connection and empathy

We’re intentional about making sure all our creative mindfulness workshops are big on play.

The case for
community care

[FYI: Small talk is out, and DMCs are in]

Whether you’re an HR manager or brand manager, you know the secret sauce to successful business is Community. And we couldn’t agree more. That’s why our workplace wellness workshops, branded events and corporate retreats are all about cultivating connections.

Deep, heartfelt, belly-giggle-full connections. Crafting and feasting, designed to empower us, together.

The sciency bit? Fostering community allows for the co-regulation of emotions. Nurturing these supportive emotional networks makes us more resilient in the face of daily stressors.
